With the correct web design, a business is able to turn a previously non-existent web presence into a popular venue of attracting new clients or at the very least potential clients. Web designers come in many shapes and sizes, however, so finding the right fit may be a bit tough.

The best way to get down and dirty with a web designer is to ask to see their previous portfolio if it isn't already available on their website. By looking through samples, you can measure their ability to make a creative yet functional design. Some web designers are more geared to a certain style of web design, such as Web 2.0 styles, so making the distinction through portfolios is important in satisfaction.

The proper web design company will also have competitive rates, but not so competitive than they have to sacrifice quality for a lower price. Most web design companies will offer a guarantee when it comes to the satisfaction of a client- this is something to at least ask about if it isn't stated in the contract. After all, there is no point in paying for something you aren't 100% satisfied with.

When looking through the portfolio of a web designer, check to see how compatible and compliant the websites are. Using the WC3 compliance tools that are available for free, one can check how well the code conforms to today's standards. By using different web browsers to view the website, one can also find out how compatible the designs are.

Some web design companies are also branching out into web development and marketing packages as well. Web development is handy for getting custom applications to help out potential clients. A finance entity, for instance, might want a mortgage calculator to offer to their clients to go a step above competitors. This also helps in marketing a website to a global audience, which is another topic that web design companies are addressing.

Internet marketing, the process of making a website known across search engines and popular Internet websites, is tough to go about without extensive knowledge of the industry. Outsourcing the task is a good idea, since industry secrets are well kept and getting into the field is hard to do without a large sum of money. Most web design companies can give clients a helping hand.

Closing Comments

To get ahead on the Internet, three different aspects should be targeted: marketing, design, and web development. Try to seek out a web design service that offers all three for a targeted package in getting services out to clients over the next popular medium of communication: the Internet.

      Hi Ashley

What you say is so true – took me a while to get my head around IM, and I am still learning. But in this industry change happens so regularly I firmly believe we will never really know all there is to know.

      Cheers

  2. Probably the most important thing, if you want any kind of web design, is to set a budget.

How much work, X, is the designer expected to do for Y amount of money, in Z amount of time. Mission creep – fear it!

Also, what is the site supposed to _do_ for you. Many designers can create an impressive-looking site; then what?

Hey there Tiger – you know you said the magic ‘B’ word (budget). How much heartache could be avoided if people would not only set a budget, but stick to it. I guess a little applied research prior to setting a budget would go a long way to helping to set a ‘realistic budget’ in the first place.

      Cheers and Thanks

  3. Do some research before choosing a design company for your web site, a lot of companies have flashy, clean web sites, but it’s only a template, and their real design style isn’t so hot. Be sure to check their actual portfolios, and be sure to shop around on price. You don’t want to overpay when not necessary.

  4. Always check out the portfolio sites of a design agency to see their real design style. Often times a company will use a template for their own site, and the sites they actually design are not that great at all. Also do some research on cost, there are a lot of ways to build a cheap web site that looks amazing on a very small budget, just takes some looking around and comparing.

  6. Web design isn’t just about designing an attractive website. There’s many aspects that go into it. It needs to work for the specific visitors you are targeting, and of course be seo friendly. These are areas that some web designers don’t always think about, but I think most to take them into consideration now.

I am not a web designed and in truth know little about it, however I do understand what it means from a customers perspective and a strong and empathetic web designer can make all the difference.

  7. I think you bring up some really good tips. Checking to make sure your web design is compatible with all versions of internet explorer, firefox and safari is very important. You do not want to spend money creating a site that doesn’t look right to some of your users.

Internet marketing is a great package to ask about too. You could create a brand new article about the right “questions” to ask a web design/development company regarding marketing and SEO. One thing to keep in consideration is that most of the fancy flash and javascript sites are not search engine friendly. Just and FYI to all readers.
