Australian Wildfires: Man Charged - Every Aussie Would Want Him Put Away For Life

You can get the full story of his arrest here

The recent Australian wildfires are devastating.  So many lives have been tragically changed for ever and no doubt many will be left with lasting and painful emotional scars.

So besides the idiots that light the damn things - where does some of the responsibility lie for the screw-up in relation to the preparation, management and prevention of loss of life and property?????? (Refer to my quoted story below)

Such utter devastation is difficult to comprehend. We are told they have charged someone with this diabolical act.  The suffering this maniac has caused to so many humans, animals and wildlife is something that I believe Australians will feel a strong and bitter anger about for a long, long time. Put the idiot away for life and throw away the key.

My heart goes out to every single living creature that has had to endure  trauma, pain and loss due to the actions of this mindless idiot.

I could get on my soap box about a lot of things when it comes to fires.  Recently I have been head to head with our own local council about surrounding bushland where we live.  Typically there answer is 'everything currently is maintained to standard'.

What bloody standard?

What ticks me off is - you cut a tree down around your property they are all over you like prickly heat.  I understand the environmentalist and global warming issues affecting us worldwide - but for heavens sake, if councils, in their infinite wisdom are going to approve residential developments in or close to dense bush and forest areas...then dammit, give residents half a bloody chance to be as safe as they possibly can and allow reasonable clearing.

To quote one story of utter council environmental madness -

One Victorian man was sued by his local government for clearing 236 trees on his property (out of 200,000 trees) to create a fire break. His local government called him an environmental vandal for illegally removing native vegetation. He lost $100,000, and was criminally convicted. Guess  what, his house was saved in these recent bush fires while many houses around him were destroyed.

Government is now talking about a Royal Commission - are they then acknowledging the fact that population sprawl into the country/bush areas is becoming a problem and that fire risks need to be addressed ....well whoppee bloody dooo!

Even with all this fire storm activity going on around Victoria/Melbourne our local council land management division seems reticent to use a little forward thinking and do something to control the reserves in the hinterland regions of our city where the population is quite dense and growing.

I cannot help but be angry with councils and how they respond to the people who are trying to rightfully protect themselves and their properties from destruction by fire.  If residents are mindful of the danger of fire threats why is it that councils and environmentalists cant see it?

I would love your thoughts and feedback on this so please give me your comments.

Also, there are collection points world wide for the victims of these most devastating of all Australian Wildfires. If you can give your assistance in anyway, please do not hold back, every little bit donated is going to help the people, the family pets, the livestock and the wildlife that have been so devastatingly affected by this tragic event.

Click here to see Video -  This video will give you some idea of what it it must have been like.  Filmed by a man from his home in St Andrews, Victoria. The roar of the flames is akin to the sound of thunder and the flames absolutely enormous. How could anyone cause such devastation and fear to so many?

After the Victorian Bush Fire on “Black Saturday” the 7th February, 2009, people have got to thinking about the different legislators relating to bush fire protection in Australia.

As a Land Management Officer working with bush fire management, he is aware of a couple of publications that cover bush fire protection.

How grateful we should be that it was not us

      Hi Matt

You are right, we absolutely should speak for those in California. We luckier ones can only try to imagine how awful a thing it must be to have to go through. Thanks for bringing that to mind.

      Cheers

  3. Arson is a terrible thing. I totally agree. It is very important to clear brush and debris away from structures. A lot of homes in our area have leaf debris on their roofs and in gutters. It is very important to take the time or call a good reputable company to clean the problem areas.

Too true Joann. Thank you for your meaningful comment. Here in Australia we are still having problems with not being allowed to clear forest/reserves that are in close proximity to and around our homes.

      Cheers

  4. Anywhere you like, the councils are responsible for cutting the trees under the powerlines but when the trees actually touch the powerlines and eventually grow through them the power companies become liable. when a bushfire starts as a result of the tree growth not being cut, they all duck for cover, wait an see when one starts in your area and don’t dare say you were not aware of it, ’cause you have just read this.. keep happy, enjoy your blog

I applaud your comments and join you in demanding answers from our holyier than thou, very safe, ‘Council Authorities’.

Many Victorian regions/Councils assaulted by these horrific fires had previously commissioned studies on under growth removal, all of which returned a ‘more must be removed’ result. I agree that the ‘Greenies’ have caused major concern, however, wouldn’t you agree it is ultimately the respective Councils that agreed with the Greenies and chose to take ‘no action’ that are ultimately accountable.

All Councils should now take a look at their respective regions and highlight all areas that require attention.

All rate payers should now become very vocal regarding environmental issues as, apparently, Councils are placing these issues in the TOO HARD BASKET!

Let’s all, on mass, let our respective Councils know that we want action, not verbal diarrhea, excuses and gaff; too many lives have been lost, communities devastated and wildlife destroyed.

    I’m right behind you Lorrette – MS-Patto

      Hi MS
Thanks for your comments – you highlight some very salient points about responsibility and councils.

I absolutely agree with you that as rate and tax payers we should be demanding answers to questions as well as asking for councils reassurances that the decisions they make on our behalf are ones that we can rely on. All too often, council are seen scampering off ducking and diving behind anything/anyone they can find when something goes wrong – such as the recent fires

In fact councils perform this so often it has almost become a ‘cyclic migratory like function’. Is this a species we need to get under control…YOU BET!!

  6. Hi all, throw away the key not good enough, string the bastards up by the wrists about 2 metres above the ground, light a very small fire and invite all and sundry to put on a twig, bet it would be a bonfire in a very short time.
however, to be serious, royal commissioner Hon Bernie TEAGUE
a good bloke, bet the greenies can’t pull the wool over his eyes, notice how vocal they (greenies)are at the moment, their silence is deafening, look what we let these wankers inflict on us, fire fuel everywhere you look, no cattle in the high country, not allowed to remove trees – dangerous or not, from your own property, leave the fallen deadwood where it falls “it will eventually rot” but in the meantime it also burns where it falls, it is nice to finally see someone with the guts to put in writing what the rest of us silent majority are thinking.
