Ranger in Lanseria, South Africa

I was born and raised in South Africa and lived there for 22 years before moving to Australia.

I was taught to not just respect but to an extent fear some of the wildlife, particularly lions.

I recall some years back a tourist jumping out of his jeep to film a pride of lions at the side of the road. He was attacked and killed by them in full view of his desperately shocked family who watched the entire episode from the jeep.

And that is what makes this story and these photos so darned fantastic!! Don’t’ know who took the photos, but wow, talk about catching the magic of the moment! … Enjoy!

This Ranger is assigned to prevent poaching around the wildlife refuge area of Lanseria in South Africa.

The way these animals interact with him is not just highly unusual, but absolutely stunning! The lions seem to know he’s there to protect them.

His charm works with hyenas and cougars too. Bear in mind that Hyenas are notorious for being vicious.

Check out the picture taken in the river – why is this one amazing? Simple, because lions hate water. These pictures will amaze you!

Very true Shoombe – though this guy’s wild side is a little wilder than most don’t you think?

  4. Those photos are absolutely amazing. The way this guy is with the lions is as if they are family members. I’ve never seen anything like that. My neighbour went on a safari in West Africa and almost got in a lot of trouble with the animals there, you do have to give the animals a lot of respect and as you said, a little fear.

Hi Stacie, yes you are so right a little respect mixed with a good dose of fear can go a long way to keep you safe in circumstances such as these. Thanks for visiting and for your comment.

  5. Lions are pretty smart creatures. They like to live in groups and like to be socially active. It is indeed rear to see a lion and a man being friends, but if trained correctly, lions can be as loyal and faithful as dogs are. Now after reading this article even I would like to have a friendly lion as a pet!

Thanks for your thoughts on this post Tim and I agree with you about the Hyenas, they are every bit as fierce and dangerous as Lions, but much quicker at turning nasty without much provocation.

    Gday Lorrette,

What a truly honorable connection with arguably the kings of the animal kingdom this man has achieved! To gain this obvious loving, trusting side of the nature of these animals shows how much we as humans do not fully appreciate the potential of our most important and often underestimated sense…instinct.

    Cheers and thanks for sharing!

      Hey There Steve

Instinct, yes how sad this is something we humans have lost touch with! Seems to me though when it comes to insight you have it! Thank you for your visit and for your great thought provoking comment.
