Men-O-Pause – Ha!

Looking back I do not recall my mother or, for that matter, any of my friends mothers figuring that we, their daughters,  needed to know about menopause.

Trying to explain cohesively, to any young girl all about the 'big kahuna of womanhood' like hot flushes, turbo-charged mood swings and  unexplained and unwarranted weight gain would surely have been a challenge for our then somewhat ultra conservative mothers.

In fact, looking back at my mother's attempt at  the serious business of the big 'mother-daughter/ birds 'n bees' discussion it was so vague and disjointed it was almost funny.

On the other hand, ask any man, in any century to describe what the woman in his life was, or is, like during menopause, and it is very likely that he will meaningfully and with pronounced feeling, use some, if not all, of the following descriptives:

  • Manic
  • Sweaty
  • Short Fused
  • Homicidal
  • Insomniac
  • Emotionally challenged
  • Teary and Sensitive,  but Dangerous
  • Unreasonable and Uncompromising

Well, I am not about to disagree,  as when I look back at what went on during my own 'menopausal phase' I am amazed that I came through it alive and without  a criminal record.

I developed some amazing abilities.  I had 'lightening fast mood swings' and 'extreme temperature swings'.  I could swim in near nigh freezing water, in freezing cold temperatures and,  was particularly sulky and put out when no-one else would join me.

I had a bowling arm that would have put Shane Warne out of business, it did not matter how far away it was, if I threw ....it found its mark...every time. And, I had an entire household 'living on danger alert' for almost a year.

Had my mother told me that I would behave this way - would I have believed her...absolutely not!

But - this post is not about us ladies,  it is about a recent email that was brought to my attention.  This is an email that is being sent from guys to guys - and, it would seem,  is what most men deny the existence of.....You got it!!!  Male Menopause.

Oh! and the photographs.. they may disappoint, as some of us did do some serious swooning over some of em!  See what you  think.

The email was  short and to the point, and it went like this -

To All Mature and Maturing Men Everywhere......Guys, We Are Not Alone!

file000 300x137 Men O Pause Ha!

file006 300x275 Men O Pause Ha!

file010 300x249 Men O Pause Ha!

file002 300x137 Men O Pause Ha!

Ah well, still, they certainly were good 'eye-candy' in their day.

Guess What Ladies...We are not alone!

  1. I personally know that when I got my menopause in my late 30s it was a great shock! There were only a few months of perimenopause before the full on menopause hit and I was trying for my second child! I was horrified and it took me a good couple of years to come to terms with my body saying “NO!”

But now years on, my life has never been better. I’m back to feeling sexy again, I’m happy with my one child and I’ve come through all of that.

Somehow I do believe that menopause is a shock to most of our systems. Pleased to hear you have come through it and all is well.

      Take care
