Female Plumbing Meets Skydiving

I am still on the fence about giving skydiving a try. That is perhaps a poor choice of words to describe this particular indecision but it is the phrase that encapsulates my frame of mind. I have reached a point in life where it is clear to me that I need to try something radically different to reorder my universe, to shake up an existence which has been stuck in a deep rut for the past couple of years.

I can see that a new perspective is in order for my mental health and literally, a bird's eye view might be just the ticket. But there are numerous and nagging considerations I should probably take into account before making the leap. Some are emotional and some are very physical. But why go to such drastic ends to freshen up a life's outlook, you may ask. I have noticed a pattern in my life that up to now any inertia that I have ever conquered, has been vanquished with radical agents of change such as having kids or completely running out of money.

This time is different. This time I feel my inertia has the need to be physically pushed, as in shoved out the door of a single engine aircraft grinding along at 10,000 feet. I do, however, owe it to myself to think over a few physical possibilities even if I believe the emotional benefits have been all worked through. One of these possibilities has to do with plumbing and not the kind that runs under the house and out to the street. Men do their best to keep their legs together when landing to avoid the obvious unpleasant possibilities.

Women have an additional reason: they often have to deal with stress induced incontinence. The woman's itty bitty urethra and a miniscule muscle are supposed to faithfully hold back a balloon-full of water, even when they follow the eight glasses a day regimen that is so good for their skin and other inner workings. With the wear of time or childbearing, a good comedy or a bad cough can betray that alliance and make for a lot of leg crossing and blushing. Compound this physicality with leaks that result from certain types of impact exercise such as jumping and it is not hard to understand why about 12% of women who sign up for skydiving classes drop out because of incontinence issues.

But I know if there is a will there is a way and I am suddenly defiant: Why can't adult diapers be have the status of sporting equipment, maybe even show up for sale in a display case next to the spandex and neoprene of the body hugging gear so popular among the athletic crowd? It is well known that professional athletes in other arenas are periodically required to tinkle in a cup for drug testing, so why wouldn't a woman skydiver be entitled to void a little fluid without embarrassing consequences while she engages in her sport? A quick survey of the design of those silky wing suits and other jump togs reveals plenty of room for a discreet adult diaper.

The invitation to experience freefall with its allure of purely human flight is compelling. I am told that the felt air pressure produces a sense of buoyancy that takes terror out of the equation, at least for a moment. It is also said that the newer, highly maneuverable square parachutes have tamed landings to being little more than a comparison with stepping off a curb. I do, however, have to keep in mind that I have nearly broken my ankle a number of times committing that very act.

But now that I have made the argument for not worrying about resorting to an adult diaper, I find that my list of reasons to not give this sky diving business a try is shorter by one important item.

  5. My wife seems to have the same problem while jumping on the trampoline. I guess that is what having two kids will do to you :)
I loved skydiving while I was in my early 20s but the last time I went wasn’t quite as much of the thrill for me and a bit more “holy $#%! what if my shute doesn’t open!?!” I guess that’s what getting older does for me.

      HI There Aico

Yep, seems ‘getting old’ does a lot of unusual things for us all – like everything above your waist wants to get down to your ankles to see what they are up too … some call it gravity!! LOL

      Cheers

  6. Skydiving is a big passion for many people and it is an extreme sport that doesn’t come without its dangers. There is more to skydiving than just jumping out of the plane because you have to go through training about safety and how to use the parachute etc.
